What stories are you telling yourself?

Our feelings provide us with valuable information and insight into our psyche and emotional terrain. Experiencing the feelings that come with jealousy is no different. I really like to talk about jealousy because  many of us have a lot of shame around experiencing it and instead of exploring what’s there, we look away.

When you see someone with a relationship you wish you had or maybe they’ve received recognition for something you’ve been working towards for a long time, you may be aware of the jealousy but did you know their is probably a deeper story looping in the background of your consciousness?

Real quick, think of someone that triggers a jealous feeling within you. Just because you feel jealous doesn’t mean you have ill feelings towards this person. Sometimes you’re jealous of a friend. The jealous emotion is less about the person and more about the stories you are telling yourself in your subconscious. When you bring up the trigger, try to breathe into the feelings that come along with it. As you’re swimming through these difficult waters notice where the tension shows up in your body. Those are the spaces to breathe into. Instead of trying to push the feeling away think more deeply about what you think this person’s achievement says about you? Again, no shame at all. I absolutely experience feeling jealous and have to sit with these same stories.

What stories are you telling yourself when you feel jealous? Some stories that I’ve noticed I was telling myself in the past are that I’m not worthy, I’m not good enough to receive, good things don’t happen to people like me, blah blah and so on and so on. It’s really hard to pull these stories out into the open but shining light on them is the first step in transforming these feelings.

Once you’re clear on the stories you’re telling yourself and which point in your life this story began, you can start to give these different versions of yourself the love, compassion and courage they are asking for. Even though we are using jealousy as an example right now, you can use this exercise with all emotions.

Lastly, be tender and patient with yourself. A story isn’t going to disappear in one day, sometimes they stay with you forever. The goal isn’t perfection, we are trying to lessen the impact of these emotions on our life so that we can move with more freedom and intention.

Journal Prompt: Think of a situation where you were made to feel less than. How can you reframe the situation? For example, instead of: “I didn’t stick up for myself” you can reframe to: “I didn’t yet have the tools or support that I needed to speak my needs”. Write about what comes up for you when you reframe

Journal Prompt: Envision yourself being infused with loving, warm, golden light. What does your body feel like? Write a nurturing letter to yourself, as if you were a grandmother speaking to her grandchild.
